Promoting sustainable travel
In line with The Lindhurst Group’s sustainability commitments and the local authority’s planning requirements, we were asked to create a full residential travel plan for phase one (578 homes) of the Berry Hill residential development. We also provided a designated travel plan coordinator (TPC) to promote and enable sustainable travel for those moving to the new homes.

Tailored transport planning and coordination
We produced a site-wide travel plan for the Berry Hill site and a bespoke travel plan for phase one of the development. The site-wide travel plan set out the modal split targets for the development and an action plan for the travel plan coordinator to implement and monitor annually. We continue, within the annual monitoring reports, to make suggestions for future initiatives and incentives that may encourage sustainable travel.
In addition to the travel plan itself, our travel plan coordinator conducts an annual survey with residents to understand their current travel patterns. The survey also identifies opportunities to encourage behavioural change and help residents embrace more sustainable modes of transport. In addition, the travel plan coordinator created a travel information pack. This contains useful information regarding travel, local amenities and connections. It is regularly updated and given to residents as they move into their new home.

I enjoy working with stakeholders to help residents make sustainable travel choices. As the site develops further, I’m excited to see how we can keep the community travelling sustainably.
Helping change travel behaviour amongst residents
As a result of ITP’s TPC role at Berry Hill, we have worked with partners to promote the use of sustainable travel. In late 2024, we worked with the local authority to produce a marketing campaign to raise awareness of the Berry Hill bus service, particularly to young people and families who may be more inclined to use the service off-peak.
Our coordination role is ongoing and ensures that our client continues to meet planning requirements and we provide regular updates on progress towards modal split targets. For 2024, 69% was set as the upper limit for the proportion of journeys undertaken by car. The travel survey in that year assessed the number of car journeys as 63%, well below the upper limit.
