Working together for greener commutes - ITP and SEGRO celebrate success

21-10-2025
SEGRO Park Coventry, has significantly exceeded its initial sustainable travel objectives, through sustainable transport planning and placemaking strategies. Today, 56% of the workforce commute sustainably via walking, cycling, public transport, or car sharing - a figure nearly triple the original target of 20% set for the first year of operation. This achievement highlights SEGRO’s ongoing commitment to delivering environmentally responsible and accessible logistics spaces as part of its Responsible SEGRO framework.

Working Together for Greener Commutes - ITP and SEGRO Celebrate Success

The 3.7 million sq ft logistics development, located four miles south of Coventry city centre, has been designed to ensure that transport is not a barrier to employment. SEGRO has worked in close collaboration with its customers to implement a range of initiatives that support sustainable commuting for the growing workforce, which is expected to reach 5,000 employees at full capacity.

Improving placemaking through sustainable transport planning

ITP – our transport planning consultancy team, made up of urban designers, traffic engineers and placemaking specialists – were appointed as the Site Wide Travel Plan Coordinator for both SEGRO Park Coventry and SEGRO Logistics Park East Midlands Gateway. We worked closely with SEGRO, its customers, and local stakeholders to design and implement comprehensive sustainable transport planning and placemaking strategies to deliver this success.

Our role has included:

  • Developing and managing the site-wide travel plan and public transport strategy
  • Coordinating with operators across the transport network to improve access
  • Supporting employers in promoting sustainable travel to staff
  • Monitoring travel behaviour and identifying opportunities for improvement

The outcome of this work is making a better place to work. And with 85% of current employees residing within Coventry, the site is well-positioned to continue advancing its sustainable travel performance in the years ahead.

Showcasing sustainable mobility networks that deliver behaviour change

To build on this success, ITP joined SEGRO and Coventry City Council in hosting the Coventry Sustainable Travel Network meeting on Tuesday 7th October, at SEGRO Park Coventry. The event brought together stakeholders from across the region to share best practices in transport planning, explore new technologies, and strengthen the collective commitment to greener commuting and placemaking.

Colin Lawrence-Waterhouse, Asset Manager at SEGRO, commented:

“Incorporating sustainable travel options into our parks is key for us and our customers, and we’ve been delighted by the take up since the services went live. By working as part of the Coventry Sustainable Travel Network, we have an opportunity to input into how commuting to and from the Park integrates into the wider travel network. We can share best practice and lessons learned, and identify new initiatives and technology, that can help us to drive participation further on the Park”.

This success builds on the strong foundation established at SEGRO Logistics Park East Midlands Gateway, where ITP continues to support SEGRO in delivering modern, accessible, and environmentally responsible logistics spaces. Read more
